Understanding Your Septic System
Your septic system is a small, on-site sewage treatment and disposal system buried in the ground. The septic system itself consists of a septic tank and a field line area. If you look inside your septic tank, you would find three separate layers.
Keeping Your System Clean
Organic solid material floats to the surface and forms a layer of what is typically known as "scum." Bacteria in the septic tank biologically convert this material to liquid.
Inorganic or inert solid materials and the by-products of bacterial digestion sink to the bottom of the tank and form the layer known as "sludge."
Fairly clear water should exit between the scum and the sludge layers. This clear water will overflow into the soil absorption area. The overflow of solid material should be avoided at all costs.
Three main factors cause solid material to build up: bacterial deficiency, lack of sludge removal, and deterioration of the baffle.
